It Has Begun, The Escape Artist

I am not even sure what to do. Gabbi is not yet 2. She's close but not quite there. Well this morning around 4:30 a.m. I heard a sort of thud or bang followed by Gabbi talking. It woke me out of a dead sleep so I am not even positive what I heard, just that woke me up. I thought to myself as I jumped out of bed that perhaps my oldest daughter was up really early or perhaps heard her crying and got her.

This was not to be. No, I got to her room and glanced in her crib. No Gabbi! I ran to the living room and there she was walking towards me, all alone. She had jumped, climbed or somehow escaped from the confines of her crib. None of my other children have done this. I know many kids do but this is a first for me. I don't know that she's ready for a toddler bed because I doubt she'll lay there. I think she'll just get up. We have a basement though with stairs leading down from the kitchen not to mention other dangers that I cannot risk her getting into in the middle of the night!

I have no clue what I'll do tonight. I'll shut her door tightly tonight. Perhaps that will keep her in but still, I don't want her to hurt herself. I was most surprised she never cried. I still think it's a little too early for a toddler bed. What did you all do when your toddlers began jumping out of their cribs?

  1. My son started escaping from his crib at 11 MONTHS! I had to take the crib apart and have him sleep in a toddler bed, but you're right, he climbed out of it all the time. Our house is a slab ranch with no stairs, but I still worried about him wandering the house at night. Luckily he usually stays in bed now (nearly a year later).

I've heard of people buying crib tents to keep their kids in their cribs - maybe that would work for you?

Thanks for the reminder to vote!

  2. Yikes. This has happened to me, but my son just got into bed with me, so I didn't worry about it.

You need to find a way that she can't get out of her crib. Something over tip the crib? I don't know.

Hope you resolve this soon. :)

  3. Oh, the joy! When my children did this, I put them back in and said "Don't get out of your crib. That is dangerous! Call mommy or daddy if you need us." Amazingly, it worked! And mine stayed in cribs until they were 3 after that. They are smarter than we think. Obviously, if they can figure out how to climb out of their crib, huh?:) If that doesn't work, it's probably toddler bed time.

  4. Orion started escaping from his crib real early too, tried the crib tent but he found a way through that, By 13 months I gave up and put him in a toddler bed. Lucky for me though, he just came across the hall and crawled into my bed. Hope you find a solution that works for everyone soon.

BTW I try to vote for you daily, good luck with the modeling...you are so beautiful, you deserve it!

Also, if you could, pop on by my blog, you've been taged. It's real simple and pain free I promice :)

  5. Ha! Our youngest would climb the slats at the corner of the crib and then just DROP to the floor when he was just over a year. We decided the toddler bed was much safer than that activity!

  6. Hi there....I wanted to say hi b/c I had a rough last pregnancy, too. At 7 weeks, they found an abnormal complex cyst on my left ovary and watched it until I was 16 weeks pregnant when they removed my left ovary via abdominal surgery. It was a low-malignancy/borderline tumor. Didn't need f/u treatment, but will be keeping a close eye on my right ovary every 6 months. Just had to say congrats to you and your healthy babe! My son is now 3 mos old and healthy as a horse!

And my oldest never climbed out, but my friend's son did. That's when they bought the crib tent!

  7. When telling her to stay inside doesn't work...

We have the habit here to remove two of the wooden thingies (can't come up the name) in the middle of the side of the bed. This creates room that is large enough for her to go out without needing to go over the side, small enough not to fall out when asleep.

A safety gate for the stairs.

One of the kids wouldn't stay in his room and when we had tried all we bought an alarm one can hang at the doorhandle and it squeeks when the handle is moved.
It squeeked so loud, that he needed two times to stay away from the door. LOL!

Be patient, there comes a time you can hardly get them leave the bed. LOL!
