I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma just 2 weeks after learning I was pregnant with my fourth child. I was able to have chemotherapy while I was pregnant, deliver a healthy baby and eventually graduate from Nursing School. Class of December 2011! I am now 13 years in remission and my little girl Gabbi is 13 old. This blog tells our story.

Sadness and Shock in My Town
I had heard some rumors but nothing definite until today. My daughters brought home papers with the confirmation that one of our local high school boys committed suicide this weekend. We are a very small community so the whole town is in shock. I am very saddened by this though I do not know the boy. I am sad that my children received pamphlets on how to deal with suicide. I got information on how to talk to my children about it and how to define it. The sister of the boy is in 5th grade as is my oldest daughter. So, the school talked to them specifically about how to talk to and treat the girl when she returns. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to this family. This is definitely something I do not know how I would deal with. I imagine the grief is more than it would be in an accidental death. Whatever the situation we must all remember to NOT blame ourselves. I think I worry about that the most. I would hate to see the family members in anyway blame themselves regardless of the situation which I do not know any details. Anyway I just got these papers from my girls. It's such a shock and so hard to know how to talk to your kids about. It's rare enough to lose a kid like this in a community of our size, but for it to be by suicide it's even more difficult to explain to children.
How horrible. I hope the grievance counselors are of great help.
ReplyDeleteEveryone concerned are in my thoughts and prayers. :)
It is dreadful that anyone would wish to take their own life and even more when it's a very young person who hasn't had a chance to experience much life. There is currently a place in Britain called Bridgend where there has been one suicide after another - all very young people, all around school age or just a little older. There apparently is no explanation for it that anyone has been able to find. It is a complete and tragic mystery - truly chilling.
ReplyDeleteLife is so very precious and we are all so lucky to have been given the chance to live it.
I remember when I was just 12, a friends brother hung himself and his sister, my age was the one who found him.
ReplyDeleteIt was hard to deal with in many ways, it was a small community so the news shocked everyone, and knowing what to say to the family when you see them is not easy.
As Kloggers/Polly said, here in the UK, Bridgend has had an astonishing amount of younf suicides in the past 12-18 months and I am so glad I don't live their with my 3 kids.
That is truly sad and I'm so sorry to hear about it. Children are so resilient and I'm sure when you talk with your daughter about it things will work out.
